For those of you who are craftsmen or want to become one, this is for you. I really enjoy carpentry when I get the time. I have tried a furniture piece before and it came out alright, but I really enjoy construction and building stuff. I have grand plans to have a workshop one day so we will have to see.
I found this the other day and it makes me want to start a project like this, but of course the cost of wood is outrageous right now. One day though..

Hey Matt,
Rachel from Vancouver here, wandered over from Sara’s blog… Your blogs are like these little windows in to this other part of the world and I find some of the things you write about really interesting. What kills me about what you just wrote was your comment about how expensive wood is for you. Do you know that the biggest economic backbone of my province since the time of European settlement (up until recently) has been the forestry industry? And yet one by one all of our mills are shutting down and lumber companies are going broke because they’re not making any money – and yet wood is EXPENSIVE down there?? Do you know why that is? Shouldn’t it be super cheap, since no one is buying any to make houses, since there are (sadly) so many houses sitting there empty?
Rachel
Hi Rachel,
Thanks for visiting the site. Well I have to admit you caught a mistake. I made a blanket statement that wood is outrageous right now. Well It is expensive but the price of wood has been declining for the last 5 years. So things are getting better, but I stand by the statement that wood is expensive. For example if I go to the local store and pick up a 2″x4″x10′ pressure treated board, which is a very common size, I will pay $4 per board. I priced building a modest shed in our back yard a couple of years ago and just materials were in the $1500 range. That is expensive to me. I believe that cost has risen over a longer period of time due to increased fuel cost, increased health care and operations cost, and the increase in the use of steel and other building materials. The economic recession is also sure to be effecting the industry.
